Nearly 2,000 Cuyahoga County voters turned out on the first day of early voting. That number is the headline. The people who came for a plate and stayed to vote are the story.
I was sitting on the stage in the middle of East 18th Street, mic check done, waiting for noon. The sun was out. Cleveland had given us one of those October days you do not take for granted. And I kept looking out at the crowd thinking the same thing.
Where are all these people coming from?
Some of them were coming to vote. Some of them were just coming. And before the day was over, I understood that the second group was the real story.
We spent the time, the money and the phone calls, and people showed up.
