Every time this country moved on us, it moved quietly first — and the only reason we knew in time was that somebody Black owned a press and printed it. The Defender. The Call and Post. The Afro. Not one of them was given to us. Every one of them was built because the alternative was letting other people decide what our conditions were called.
That has not changed. It has just gotten faster.
Right now there is a recession running through Black households that nobody in Washington will say out loud. There is lead in the walls of houses where our children sleep in this county, and the money to take it out went back to Columbus. Somebody has to say that in plain English, on the record, with our name on it.
